People often ask why I moved from the beach in California to the desert in Scottsdale, AZ so I have decided to write my story on moving to Scottsdale AZ. 10 years ago I was finishing up my business degree at California State Long Beach and did not know what my next step would be. My husband had started fixing and flipping homes with a group of investors and had 2 homes for us to personally work on. The mortgages on both of those homes combined were a little less than our monthly rent in Huntington Beach, and we decided then to make the big move to the desert.

I’ll be honest; I do miss the beach and some of the amenities that Southern California had to offer like Disneyland and The Getty Museum. But I wouldn’t trade it for the lifestyle I have now. I live in North Scottsdale on about half an acre with plenty of space between my neighbors—I would surely pay twice the price for the same home in Orange County. The commercial buildings are setback from the street highlighting the natural desert landscape lush with Saguaros, Cactus, and Palo Verdes. I have seen javalinas, bobcats, deer and even wild horses here and love the feeling of nature. The only nature I would see in my neighborhood in Orange County were stray dogs, roaches and rats.

Scottsdale is known as the World’s finest golf destinations with more than 200 golf courses in the area. Home to world renowned trophy courses and PGA venues to lesser known hidden gems that await your discovery, Scottsdale is a dream destination for golfers of all levels.  There are amazing homes in some exclusive golf course communities offering the Country Club lifestyle even Trump would be impressed with.

Forget “June Gloom” or the marine layer, almost every day here is sunny. And though I wish I had more time to spend poolside, just seeing the sun outside my windows and feeling the warmth on my skin outside is enough for me to feel that uplifting Vitamin D release.

Moving to Scottsdale is definitely a lifestyle choice. Every time I visit Southern California I think the traffic got just a little bit worse, or maybe it’s the fact that I am rarely in it in Scottsdale. I actually enjoy driving here, and no longer fear the roads. Opening my sunroof, listening to my music while cruising on the open roads, well it is a lot more appealing than the stop and go traffic that is the norm in Southern California. I had to learn to watch my speed here in AZ though, as the open roads actually make it possible to speed!

And let me talk about the food, the restaurants here are amazing! Moving to Scottsdale put 10 pounds on me that first summer, luckily I have discovered the hiking trails to take it off. There are so many delicious restaurants to satisfy this foodie! Scottsdale Quarter, Kierland, and Old Town are a few of my favorite places. The Scottsdale Culinary festival is a world-class food lover’s dream.  I love to catch the happy hours at spots like Brio, Kona Grill and Olive and Ivy where you can find really delicious deals.

Scottsdale has some of the most beautiful desert resorts in the world and holds the title of having more resorts per capita than any other US city! I learned all about the “staycation” when moving to Scottsdale, and found some great deals at local resorts while not having the expense of travel. One of my favorite restaurants is located in the Hyatt at Gainey Ranch—Alto ristorante. After a fabulous modern Italian meal, you can take a Gondola ride while listening to the beautiful voice of the Italian Gondolier. These world class resorts also offer top notch spa services. Whether it be a facial or massage, you will not have to travel far to enjoy luxurious spa treatments.

Waterfront homes for sale in scottsdaleWhen moving to Scottsdale, I also discovered the world class lakes that area had to offer. I live less than 30 minutes away from Bartlett Lake, and about 45 minutes away from Lake Pleasant. Both are awesome scenic waterskiing lakes that are cleaner and less populated than the lakes I frequented in Southern California. Canyon, Roosevelt, Apache and Saguaro are some of the other great fishing and waterskiing lakes.

There are many great hiking spots here, and a few awesome trails minutes from my house. Pinnacle Peak, Toms Thumb, Camelback and Squaw Peak are some great local trails that offer easy to difficult hikes with amazing desert scenery.

Both of my daughters have enjoyed riding horses, and there are hundreds of great ranches in my area that offer riding. Every morning when taking my daughter to school, we love to see all of the mama and baby horses roam the fields of the ranch down the street from us. Scottsdale is also home to the world famous Arabian Horse Show which brings over 2000 horses, top owners, trainers, from around the world to compete.

Now I will be honest, it gets hot here—really hot. When moving to Scottsdale I left 70 degree weather to land in 110 degree heat. And being a dry heat, it really does make a difference and feels great when you are by the pool. However when I am showing vacant homes or walking through parking lots it can be very unpleasant. To beat the heat during the summer, I love to take the hour drive up to Prescott or Sedona where it’s much cooler and absolutely beautiful. Sedona offers natural rock waterslides, red rock canyons, jeep tours and more. I won’t get off on a tangent here as that is a whole other blog!

Now that is moving to Scottsdale from my perspective, you may ask others and get different answers. I miss my family and friends in CA, and luckily it is a cheap plane ticket or easy 5 hour drive away. My family often visits here as well and takes advantage of some of the great deals at some of the Scottsdale resorts. I will always have a place in my heart for California, but have embraced the life I have created here in the Desert.
